*We keep being reminded that ‘Racism Is Alive and Well’ even in 2014.
It may hold little surprise that this story comes out of good ol’ Mississippi, where a Justice Court judge is accused of striking a mentally challenged young man and yelling, “Run, n—–, run.” A complaint has been filed by the family of a 20-year-old African-American man named Eric Rivers. It alleges Judge Bill Weisenberger, who is white, struck their son on May 8 at the Canton Flea Market. And there appears to be witnesses. Cathy Hendrix of Tuscaloosa is a vendor at the Canton Flea Market. She told The Clarion-Ledger that on May 8, she saw Rivers standing on the sidewalk, asking if they needed help, because the vendors rely on the help of locals to load and unload their property for pay. “That young man was wanting to work to earn money to buy a bike,” she said. Her sister, Tammy Westbrook, also of Tuscaloosa, told the media she saw Weisenberger “rear back and slap” Rivers twice. The young man bolted away, and she said she heard Weisenberger yell out, “Run, boy, run,” and “run, n—–, run.” She also overheard the judge brag afterward about what he had done. “This is 2014,” said former Canton Mayor William Truly, president of the Canton branch of the NAACP, “not 1960, where someone could slap a young man and call out, ‘Run, n—–, run.” Darlene Ballard, executive director of the state Judicial Commission, said if the allegations are true, they would “violate multiple canons” of the Judicial Code of Conduct. Truly requested Weisenberger, a former law enforcement officer and former emergency operations director in Madison County, to step down from hearing cases until the matter is resolved — or simply to resign. “No citizen should have to face justice before a judge who holds such a high degree of racial animus and hatred,” Truly said in a news conference Friday. If anyone expected Weisenberger to return telephone calls asking for a response to the allegations, they were disappointed. He did not, as of this writing. Truly expects a Madison County grand jury to eventually hear the matter. He said the NAACP plans to file complaints with the Judicial Performance Commission, the state attorney general’s Vulnerable Adult Unit and the Justice Department. Tammy was especially emotional because her own son suffers from autism, she said, “I was angry.” Weisenberger was dressed in a security officer’s uniform, even though he is a judge. Hendrix praised the help she received from “many wonderful deputies during her visit to Canton” but was angered by what she witnessed, she said. “I do not care if this young man was being a nuisance,” said Hendrix, who is white. “I do not care if he were breaking a law, I do not care if he were loitering, but I do care that a man of authority, one that is sworn to protect and serve, was slapping a young man.” She said Weisenberger “seemed to be suffering from an authoritative complex and was making sure that everyone knew that.” Hendrix said after Weisenberger’s encounter with Rivers, she saw the judge “jump” a female vendor, “telling her he would make her park far away and make her walk to load her goods.” The judge supposedly has the following on his campaign website, declaring that he believes “Justice Court IS the people’s court.” Under Mississippi law, the only requirement to be elected a Justice Court judge is a high school diploma. After taking office, the judges are required to take up to six hours of training a year. I must say, it is amazing how racists continue to believe that “everyone who looks like them, thinks like them.” It is this that makes them feel the sense of entitlement and brazeness to do this stuff out loud, in broad daylight. The fact that witnesses saw this and commented speaks volumes on how ignorant these people continue to be. …And the only requirement to hold such a high position is a high school diploma? *Wow! This has got to be the quickest marriage and divorce in history.
Andrea Kelly is one of the stars of the reality show, “Hollywood Exes” as a result of being the former wife of R&B singer R Kelly – to whom she was married from 1996-2006. The couple, said to be estranged during most of their marriage, finally divorced in 2009. But here’s the thing: “Drea” shocked her friends and fans of the show sh*t-less on the Season 2 premiere of “Hollywood Exes” when she announced her engagement to a barber named Brian McKee – someone nobody in her group of friends had ever met – on March 6th. And by May 6th the couple had officially tied the knot. Now, just as folks had finally began to wrap their brain (as much as possible) around that news, here comes news that the couple has already divorced! In case you suffer from amnesia, let me break this down for you…We are still in the month of May, in the year 2014. This article is being published on Monday, May 19. and the divorce is already a done deal! Past tense. Not going to happen…HAPPENED ALREADY. Now that’s enough to give you a serious case of whiplash! Now let’s face it, people do crazy things for love. We get that. We have known friends to meet a man or woman and six months later, they’re living together. But c’mon…a seemingly overnight engagement happens to a divorcee who was previously in a long-term relationship; who then turns around two months later and marries the dude is even strange for us. But moving forward what – you may ask – hell, we want to know, could possibly have happened to warrant a DIVORCE…not a separation, in this whirlwind relationship? S2S reports, with Drea confirming, that Brian had an ongoing “inappropriate relationship” with another woman. And he was asking said woman for money. Rumors about trouble in their brief marriage started to swirl shortly after season 3 of “Hollywood Exes” premiered. Supposedly, A women who Brian was currently dating or had previously dated began sent the new wife (Drea) info about her hubby via social media. According to text messages, Brian had allegedly hit one woman up for financial support, even listing the reasons why he needed the money. “I just got 3000 a month in bills with no job, car pmnt, student loans etc cell,” read the text allegedly sent by Brian. Jaylynn Umbleby and Drea exchanged Twitter messages on May 12 and Drea thanked Jaylynn for sharing the truth about Brian. “I read you’re [sic] email and I want the world to know I FORGIVE YOU! And you stepped up like a WOMEN [sic],” Drea wrote. “I’M PROUD OF YOU!” Drea also wrote, “thank u for your support. I’m proud 2b a living example of #girlpower and #forgiveness at its finest XOXO”. Drea’s positive outlook is commendable, we guess. But it’ll sure be interesting to see how this all plays out. In the meantime, you might want to check out a clip of Drea and Brian surprising her friends about the engagement on episode 1 of the new season of “Hollywood Exes” that aired this month.
Oprah Winfrey Network has postponed their planned documentary on Michael Sam, the first openly gay player drafted to the NFL. “After careful consideration and discussion with the St. Louis Rams, ‘The Untitled Michael Sam Project’ has been postponed, allowing Michael the best opportunity to achieve his dream of making the team,” OWN’s president Erik Logan said in a statement. “It’s clear that we, along with the world, recognize the important opportunity that Michael now has in this moment. We will continue to support him in his journey to earn a spot playing for the Rams.” According to Sam’s agent Cameron Weiss, the postponement was in his client’s best interest. “This will allow for Michael to have a total focus on football, and will ensure no distractions to his teammates,” he explained. “Everybody involved remains committed to this project and understands its historical importance as well as its positive message.” The news came just two days after the cable network officially greenlighted the reality show. It was scheduled to be produced by the same team behind the “Lindsay” docu-series. According to the Hollywood Reporter, it’s unclear when OWN will revisit the project. http://www.blackamericaweb.com
CHICAGO (WLS) -- Nine years ago, when Wilbert Taylor, Jr. was 19-years-old, he was shot in the head and paralyzed. He was in Chicago, on break from Southern Illinois University. The shooting left Taylor in need of a wheelchair and he was told he would never walk again. Now 28 years old, he was eventually able to regain most of his movement and his strength and Thursday he will walk down the aisle for the graduation ceremony at Chicago State University with a degree in criminal justice. "I worked really hard and survived but I still had the will to do the things I had set out to do," Taylor said. According to Taylor, on the night of July 5, 2005, he was leaving at party in the 9600 block of South. Michigan. He was helping his friend, a DJ, pack up when a car drove by and opened fire. "The bullet actually went in the back of my head and came out in the front," he said. "I was completely paralyzed on my left side and in a coma." Doctors told family members he would not walk again, if he survived. "It was said they had never seen anyone recover from such an injury," he said. "To learn how to get dressed with one arm and half of my body, it hurt me a lot. Having to depend on someone else was very humbling," No one has been arrested for Taylor's shooting. At first he was very angry and depressed, but with the help of his family he was able to let the anger go and flourish. Now he wants to motivate others to do the same. Originally Taylor wanted to be a journalist, but after the shooting he decided to specialize in criminal justice. He is troubled by the violence in Chicago and wants to make a difference "I now want to reach out and help young people," he said. "I volunteer with the Black Star and I hope my story can stop the violence and help someone else, and let them know if you stay determined you really can do what you want, if you put your mind to it." http://www.abc7chicago.com
Disgraced L.A Clippers owner Donald Sterling has finally made a rebuttal to the racist comments he was recorded saying that led to his lifetime ban from the NBA. He spoke to CNN’s Anderson Cooper in Los Angeles for the first time about his recorded conversation with “confidante” V. Stiviano that led to the ban. “I’m a good member who made a mistake and I’m apologizing and I’m asking for forgiveness,” he told Cooper. “Am I entitled to one mistake, am I, after 35 years? I mean, I love my league, I love my partners. Am I entitled to one mistake? It’s a terrible mistake, and I’ll never do it again.” The interview will air on CNN Monday night at 8 p.m. ET Sterling, 80, a billionaire lawyer and real-estate investor is the longest tenured owner in the NBA. He has owned the Clippers since 1981. In that time, he’s been reviled for years for his cheap ways with the team, has settled two discrimination lawsuits, including a record $2.75 million dollar one with the Department of Justice, settled a sexual harassment case and was accused of age and race discrimination by his former general manager, NBA legend Elgin Baylor. “I caused the problem. I don’t know how to correct it,” Sterling tells Cooper. In the audio clip, Sterling is angered that Stiviano is posting pictures online with African-Americans, including basketball Hall of Famer Earvin “Magic” Johnson and L.A. Dodgers star Matt Kemp. NBA Commissioner Adam Silver has asked the other 29 owners to force Sterling, to sell the Clippers. “I’m not a racist,” Sterling told Cooper. “I made a terrible mistake. I’m here to apologize.” In another tape, acquired by Radar Online, Sterling says he said what he said in order to have sex with Stiviano. “I don’t know. An 80-year-old man is kind of foolish, and I’m kind of foolish,” he told Cooper. “I thought she liked me and really cared for me,” he said. “I guess being 51 years older than her, I was deluding myself. … I just wish I could ask her why, and if she was just setting me up.” For her part, Stiviano has said she doesn’t believe that Sterling is a racist, but that she also has more tapes of their conversations with similar subject matter. Stiviano has received gifts from Sterling in excess of $2 million, including four luxury cars and a condo and was being sued by Sterling’s wife for return of the gifts. She is the second woman Sterling’s wife has sued for the same reason. But Sterling is not done putting his foot in his mouth, apparently. In the CNN interview, he was asked if he’d apologized to Magic Johnson, who he said he’s spoken to since the scandal broke. “If I said anything wrong, I’m sorry,” Sterling said. “He’s a good person. I mean, what am I going to say? Has he done everything he can do to help minorities? I don’t think so. But I’ll say it, he’s great. But I don’t think he’s a good example for the children of Los Angeles.” Though Shelly Sterling and her lawyer have both gone on record saying that she will fight to retain her ownership stake in the Clippers, she may have a battle on her hands. She told ABC’s Barbara Walters in a televised interview that she shouldn’t be blamed for the actions of her husband who she’s been married to for 58 years. She told Walters she’s been considering divorcing Sterling for 20 years, but was advised by her lawyer and financial advisor not to do so. She has said she has no interest in running the team, and would support a management team to run it. Unfortunately for her, the NBA Constitution allows for only one controlling owner. (Sterling’s wife shares ownership of the team through a family trust.) If the rest of the league’s owners votes that majority owner out, all secondary owners are out as well. Shelly Sterling has yet to be banned by the NBA and continues to attend playoff games, but several sources in the NBA have said that if she should retain an interest, it’s unlikely she will have the support of players or coaches. http://www.blackamericaweb.comhttp://www.cnn.com
Most people who’ve seen the photo of 13-year-old Willow Smith laying in bed with her shirtless 20-something year old friend actor Moises Arias, have found an issue….but not Willow’s mom Jada Pinkett-Smith. When asked about the photo by TMZ reporters, the actress and activist chided: “Here’s the deal. There was nothing sexual about that picture or that situation. You guys are projecting your trash on to it and you’re acting like covert pedophiles and that’s not cool.” http://www.blackamericaweb.comhttp://www.tmz.com
The New York Post’s Page Six and the UK’s Daily Mail tabloid are reporting that Sherri Shepherd and her husband of three years, Lamar Sally, are going through a separation. Page Six says the comedian/actress and host of The View is “telling friends that her three-year marriage to TV writer Sally is in trouble and they are separating. Reps for Shepherd, as well as her manager Darris Hatch, did not comment last night despite numerous requests from Page Six. The Daily Mail took things a step further and claimed the source of the breakup could be accusations of infidelity against Sally. A source told MailOnline that after the couple’s wedding in 2011, there were reports that he was romantically involved with a woman who was a close friend of the family. According to the tabloid, she was even a part of the couple’s wedding party, and Shepherd had no idea they used to be lovers. Sally is reportedly back in Los Angeles, while Shepherd is in New York working on The View. Neither party has put out a statement regarding the separation reports. Shepherd and Sally married only year after dating. The couple were said to be trying to have a child together, but due to Shepherd’s fertility issues, surrogacy became an option. She divorced her first husband of eight years, Jeff Tarpley in 2009, after she found out he was having an affair. http://www.eurweb.comhttp://www.blackamericaweb.com

Man…tough break! Our friends over at Eben Gregory are reporting that Chris Brown will remain in custody for his 25th birthday. Breezy celebrates his born day on Monday, May 5th and his next hearing isn’t until May 9th! He isn’t guaranteed to get out on the 9th either but boy what a difference a year makes! Legendary comic Paul Mooney got downright racial during a taping of the Arsenio Hall show Monday night ... spitting the N-bomb at an audience member in a performance that's being hailed as "the most embarrassing, disrespectful standup bombing ever." Mooney -- who famously appeared on "Chappelle's Show" and wrote for Richard Pryor -- was booked to do a short standup bit on Arsenio ... but rambled on for more than 14 minutes in a bizarre routine that touched on everything from "Roots" to Obama to his admiration of an audience member's giant breasts. But things really went off the rails when Mooney turned his attention to a black guy in the audience who he called a "bald-headed n**ga." One person who was there tells us ... the crowd was stunned -- and sat in awkward silence as Mooney tried to transition into different material. We're told it appeared producers were scrambling to cut him off and end the segment -- but Paul ignored the cues and kept going until a crew member used the P.A. system to interrupt him ... and a staff member went on stage to tell him to wrap it up. One audience member tweeted about the scene -- saying, "OMG! I just witnessed THE MOST EMBARASSING, Disrespectful "standup" BOMBING ever by Paul Mooney @arseniohall I wanted to walk out!" Eventually, Arsenio jumped in and helped end the segment in a respectful manner. Story developing .. http://www.TMZ.com
Chicago News and Weather | FOX 32 NewsCHICAGO (FOX 32 News) - Mayor Emanuel finally surfaced Wednesday to respond to a Tribune report that CNN's "Chicagoland" documentary-series was orchestrated in part by City Hall. The Mayor denied it and dismissed the whole idea. However, others aren't convinced. The other thing the Mayor said yesterday that triggered a lot of reaction was that he hadn't watched any of the series. “It's hard to believe the mayor wouldn't watch an 8 part commercial to himself...that he controlled," said John Kass of the Chicago Tribune.http://www.myfoxchicago.com
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Prosecutors and an attorney for Chris Brown were discussing a possible deal on Thursday to resolve probation issues faced by the R&B singer over his 2009 attack on Rihanna. Brown was led into a Los Angeles courtroom in handcuffs for a short hearing after U.S. marshals transported him from Washington, D.C. Superior Court Judge James R. Brandlin ordered Brown to return to court on May 9 when a possible deal could be addressed in court. No possible terms were discussed Thursday. Brown could face continued confinement or other punishment if Brandlin or another judge determines he violated his probation by getting arrested after a man was punched in October outside a hotel in the nation’s capital. Brandlin revoked Brown’s probation in December and ordered him into rehab for anger management and other issues. Brown’s attorney Mark Geragos said if a deal could not be reached by Tuesday, he would request the release of the singer. “I’m hopeful that we get it resolved, and we get it resolved quickly,” Geragos said. “He turns 25 next week. So I’d like to give him an early birthday present if I can.” The Grammy winner has been in custody since March 14 when he was expelled from a court-ordered rehab for violating its rules. Brown’s trial on a misdemeanor assault charge in Washington is on hold while his bodyguard appeals an assault conviction for the same incident. Brown did not speak during the hearing on Thursday but smiled at his mother and other supporters. http://www.tmz.comhttp://www.ap.orghttp://www.blackamericanweb.com
